Managing Overdue Items
Library patrons receive the following notices through email or first class mail:
- First notice - 7 days late
- Second Notice - 14 days late
Patrons whose materials are 21 days overdue receive a letter mailed regular first class and certified mail stating that she/he has 10 days to return items or the Village of Webster will prosecute through Municipal Court. The court may prosecute anyone who has failed to return any item(s) valued at more than $25.
If the patron does not return materials before that deadline, their names are turned over to Municipal Court. Once their names have been forwarded to Municipal Court, they will be issued a subpoena and assigned a court date.
Some patrons may believe that if they return materials after their names have been sent to court, this excuses them from appearing at their assigned court date. This does not excuse them or clear their charges with the Village of Webster. Any citizen who receives a subpoena must appear in court or an arrest warrant is issued. Patrons are not arrested for overdue library materials but for failure to appear in court.
